Really great working with Lee Wilson and Bloomberg BusinessWeek for their risk management section. I've done some illustrations before that played with the layout of the page, but was more of a collaboration to design the page of the opener. Always nice having the opportunity to do more then just a nice image.

Scientific American:Worldview

I was pretty excited to do the cover and a series of illustrations for the 3rd annual Scientific American: Worldview issue.
The feature article was on the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China) and what makes them the new, up and coming nations.
The feature was breaking apart the BRIC nations and identifying what makes them so special, so the idea behind the cover was to deconstruct the BRIC nations, and i wanted to give it the same feel as deconstructivist architecture in a way. Really a lot of fun working on this, and the the open art direction was super great.

Below are a few pictures of the illustrations as they looked once publish and shot by an iPhone.

Here are some of my sketches for the cover and how i came up with the image, incase you wanted to see them.

So the final is sort of a mix of these 2 ideas.

Its been a long time since i worked on a collaboration project. I think the last time I worked on something together with someone on a collaboration was back in my Art Center days. So it was definitely a fun experience working with the super Jillian Tamaki on this poster for the Ballroom Marfa.

The posters will be 3 color silk screen prints 36 inches tall. The prints will be released in limited supply, for more information about the poster and event you can go to, ballroommarfa.org.

This was one of three illustrations for Proto Magazine, the full page opener. The article was about the new discoveries about Glia cells which have been, until now looked at as just simple cells. Through different types of scans, they've found them to have more depth then previously thought.

So for this i just wanted to show a pretty simple 2 dimensional drawing contrasted by something that gave more visual depth, and had a sense of dimension.

It was really great to get to work with GOOD magazine again. Really love the direction and everything about the magazine, so it was great to work on a series of illustrations for an article about the need to innovate and have new green sources of energy. It's always great to get a series of illustrations to do, especially when you get a cover to go along with it.

This was for the Financial Post. The feature story was about the flat economy and the ways to invest in a flat environment.

For the smaller illustrations for the article, the first was about investors keeping active to navigate in the flat market. The second was stability and finding investments which are stable and the third was about being selective in your investments.

Really great to work with Lina Mcphee on this.

This was for an article for the Travel section of the New York Times, about how passengers have more rights, when it comes to airplane delays, and different ways they are trying to accommodate those that are delayed.

For the fall 09 issue of Proto Magazine, I was contacted to do a cover and 3 illustrations. The story had to do with cancer, more specifically the spread of it and how there were new theories on its metastasis.

One of the greatest things about this job was the huge freedom which came with it. Dealing with science and medical magazine, or the NY times has always been really nice when it comes to doing something that pushes my limits. Great art directing, by Roman Luba.

There is also a small interview on the process on the Proto Magazine website. Also the articles which are pretty interesting.

This was something done for the NYT a little while ago. I had not much working time for this, half and 1 hr. It was a lot of fun working on this with the multi-talented Leanne Shapton.

The article was a about water boarding, and how its really not a useful as some would think. People will say anything while being tortured, and information can be hard to search through, or even pieced together to have a meaning.

This we, there's also a something I worked on in The New Yorker out this week, and a small letters piece in the NY Times today. Those can be seen by visiting their websites.

It was pretty great when the NY Times called me for this sort of odd assignment. I was asked to not only draw but, stake out a water fountain in LA(where I'm from) for an hr or 2 to see how the fountain was, and who had visited the fountain within the that time period.. being around lunch time.

The outcome wasn't too surprising for me.

Also a piece on military suicides, post war.

Having a friend that went to Iraq it was pretty interesting to hear his take on his experiences dealing with life after war.

The pieces are for the Fall preview for the New York Sun, which came out on stands this week. It was great working with Kris Porter on the Fall preview issue for the New York Sun. It consisted of a cover 11"x22", 4 illustrations, and 7 spots. Was alot of fun working on this one. It was really nice that Kris was really open to my ideas, and basically was free to do my thing on these.

This ran in last weeks issue of the New Yorker. A different approach as i was asked to do a portrait of Philippe de Montebello as he is narrating the Saint-Saëns’s "Carnival of the Animals" at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

A little background info, Philippe de Montebello has been the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for 31 years.. So I found it surprising/honored to get contacted by the Met to buy a print so that they could present it to Mr. Montebello. I hope he enjoys it.

This was done for Pheonix Magazine... It had to do with an illegal immigration program they have there that doesn't seem to solve the problem. Great working with Brian Goddard on this one.

Also something that ran last week in the NY Times Op/ed, for the new laws that allow more freedom for wire tapping.. working again with Kim and Brian... watch what you say... they're listening.

It was also very cool to be interviewed and have work featured in the July issue of Koream... which is a Korean American magazine. Here are some pictures from the issue.

Printed in yesterday's New York Times under the week in review section.. It was the biggest piece i've done for the New York Times as of yet. All the art directors that i've worked with at NY Times have been really great and it was no different working with Aviva, Its always fun and challenging working with the sometimes short deadlines of a newspaper.

Article was addressing how people reaching the age of retirement, either can't retire or it would be better if they didn't for monetary reasons... But they face a lot of obstacles with the way older workers are view by employers and the competition of new young employees.

For the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists... Besides having one of the coolest publication titles, it was really great working with Joy Olivia Miller on this one.

To combat global warming scientist are geoengineering.. but this isn't always the best solution as many are either really ridiculous or have very serious consequences of their own.. interesting article. The PDF off of their site incase you want to read it

Small one for Paste Magazine, one of the better music/lifestyle magazines out there. Working with José Reyes on this one.. It was about musicians getting inspired from books. I went a bit more literal for this one.

Also in other news, my good friend Drew Beckmeyer had an awesome show, two weekends ago at Tinklark. Definitely worth checking out.

Published today, for the LA Times Book Review, working with the super nice Carol again, I got to work on a nice color piece. It was a lot of fun doing this assignment. Basically talking about Literature as entertainment. I thought the main essay was really well written. One thing thats great about most illustration assignments is that with each job there's something new, a new angle, review, story, etc...

Also another piece in the New Yorker which is out on stands right now. It was about the horse exhibit going on at the Natural History Museum... Working with Max again, good times.

On another note, I was also honored to find out that one of my letters pieces that i had done, was selected to be displayed at the "The Illustrated Letter" show that was held at the New York Times building, in New York. What was displayed at the show were selected letters section pieces, that were published in the NYT in the past 4 decades . I didn't know that one of my letters pieces was seleceted, till my friends Josh Cochran and Frank Stockton, text messaged me about having one of my previous letters illustrations in it. Josh was also nice enough to display his phone photography skills for me (nice guy that Josh). It's nice to see these small, daily published pieces, getting a second light of appreciation. When I did this one I was working with Brian Rea.

New piece for the New York Times Book Review which was published today... Working with Nicholas Blechman, which is always really great. Gouache, chalks, and digital, for this one.

The book is basically about a guy who looks to saving ex girl friends daughter (which is actually really his daughter) as a mean for redemption for the sins of his past.

There are some pretty cool projects on the horizon, so looking forward to those.

Also on another note i was happy to be informed, that i'll have 2 pieces in the American Illustration 27 annual, which will be out next year.

Something i did for Canadian Business. The story was about how there is going to be a switch in accounting standards in 2011. How some are not taking it as seriously as they should. Procrastination, not a good thing... It was great working with Tim Davin, and John Montgomery on this one.

It was an honor to work with Nicholas Blechman at the NY times book review to do a piece on the book "The Age of Shiva". Strangest thing about the book was the almost incestuous love the main character has for her child, in replacement for her absent husband. It was really great working with Nicholas on this as there was a lot of freedom involved with coming up with the visuals, and also to be illustrating something for the New York times book review.

Here is another book review.. also involving a child, but this one was for the LA times book review... The book is entitled "His Illegal Self", and it was about a child growing not having mother or father figure in his life, but to fill the void with less then ideal people. Working again with Carol on this project.

Today the cool great people over at Tiny Showcase are running my bird kite print... It should be a great place for someone to get it since the silkscreen original version was sold out, also some of the proceeds go to Greenpeace... so its good for everyone.

The piece above was for Globe Investor in Canada. The article was about how stock in pet related products have sky rocketed as of late.... So true as i don't remember dogs wearing designer clothes while i was growing up.

Here is a piece that was published for the sunday edition of the LA Times Book Review last weekend... It was a for a book entitled "How the Dead Dream". About a man set out to get all the money he can in life, but strangely finds a passion for animals, esp. the endangered... So he sets out risking life and his profession to visit these animals, by breaking into zoos and getting as close to these animals as possible. A little excerpt from the book review.

"As the novel winds toward its conclusion, T 's limits become apparent. He screws up a vital friendship, insults a key business partner, watches a loved one slip away and is unable even to protect his dog. Checking in on his latest development-in-progress, a resort of the coast of Brazil, he decides to visit an animal preserve- the only way to get there is a Conradian trip up a jungle river. Through it all he ponders, in one way or another, the ends of things. Extinction. Death."

The art director on the piece was Carol Kaufman, who was great working with. It was also really cool to get published in the book review with my friend Nathan Huang, who just revised his website. Awesome.

On another note.. LA has been really cold lately.

A couple weeks ago, I was honored to get a call from the New Yorker. I really didn't think that i'd ever get a call or even get published in the New Yorker but I was happy to see it in print in the January 21st issue. It was great working with the art director Max Bode on this. It was an illustration for the up coming Jasper John's 'Gray' show at the Met in New York.

Also on another note, I was lucky to get a piece in Society of Illustrators NY.. So i should have a piece up in New York in March and in the book Illustrators 50.

This years almost over, and I'm pretty excited to see how 08' will unfold. This years been great over all, and hope everythings been good for everyone else as well.

Heres a recently finished job for VSA Partners New York and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It was great working with Jennifer Lee and the people at HHMI, since I've always liked the art direction of the book. The piece was 17.5"x2.5 and is supposed to run on the bottom of the page...

After a 20-year wait, a team of scientists is building an atlas to map gene products the way astronomers identify stars in the sky.

Treating gene expression patterns as a searchable constellation of stars. The idea was too far-fetched to tackle two decades ago, when Chris Q. Doe was a postdoctoral fellow. He wanted to build an atlas showing the three-dimensional location of transcription factors involved in generating the fruit fly’s central nervous system (CNS). Others’ atlases, however, covered simpler one- and two-dimensional patterns.

A new piece, its for a upcoming calendar.. I chose the month of may selfishly because my birthday is in May and also the fact that most of the cool people i know are born in May...

I had free reign on this project which made it fun since i could experiment a bit, I just had to put in some of the world holidays for the month of May (Save the Rhino Day, Cinco de Mayo, Parent's Day, lonely guy sitting on bench day, etc...) Lots of fun.

Small spot for NY times that was published today.. Letters in response to an article where they were contemplating literally putting walls up in iraq to seperate the Sunnis and Shiites. Working again with Sam on this one. Good Times.

Had a new illustration in todays NY Times, in the Op/Ed section.

The Article was about global warming, and how the situation is escalating at a dramatic rate. Worked again with Brian Rea on this one... great art director.

On another note.. there seems to be alot of black and white pieces on my blog, so the next post will have to be a nice colorful one.

A poster that i recently finished for Cramer Krasselt. Its for an annual croquet fundraiser that is thrown to help raise funds for the Penfield Children's Center. It was awesome to work on this project since alot of friends of mine had worked on a poster for this event, or were making posters for this years event. Also it was cool working with Blake, Karen and Christina over at Cramer Krasselt. Posters are 26"x40"

Nucleus asked if i'd like to design a t shirt for they're new artist series shirts that should be available at the San Diego Comic Con later this month.. So i had to keep the number of layers to under 4, but i like the out come, and can't wait to see it on the fabric. It's titled "Beautiful Day".

On another note the Tiny Showcase contacted me recently and wanted to carry reprints of my "Deep Down Depth" print at a reduced size and very affordable price. Shea'la and everyone else at Tiny Showcase are really cool people, check out they're website and buy a print if you'd like.

A Portion of the proceeds of both, go to Charity. The "Beautiful Day" Shirts will help out the Wild Life Foundation, and the "Deep Down Depth" reprints help out Rock and Roll Camp for Girls.

Here was a spot illustration I had in the letters section of the New York Times Op Ed for today. The letters addressed the issues of heart disease on the health care system. This was the quickest deadline to date, i got the call for the job at about 8am and had to have the finish in by about 2pm PST. The quick deadline made it pretty fun and its always great working with Brian and Sam.

A spot illustration I did for the May 27th sunday edition of the New York Times. It was for the Letters section where readers were voicing they're opinion about a previous article about current copyright laws. The original article was in favor of copyright laws being perpetual and rights inherted.

Most of the letters were against the opinion of the previous article, citing that works should be made public for the benefit of people in general. So that people can be inspired by previous works and build off of that idea, and so forth.

Also got to meet up with the super talented Sam Weber in New York, whos work in person is really awesome.

Ill have a piece in this show at Nucleus that goes from May 19th-28th... All of the pieces are 5"x7" and will be priced from 50 or 100 dollars, and part of the proceeds go to charity... so its a great time to pick up some good art work for a pretty cheap price. I wish i could make the show but ill be in Philly and New york during the time.

Last year was a pretty great year for me. I feel like i accomplished more then i had planned... but looking back the what i feel like were accomplishments seem more like small steps now, and the road ahead seems as far as it did before.

Theres still so much to do... but im looking forward on making this year better then the last.

I've been trying to broaden the limits of my work. Working with 2-dimensional pieces as well as 3-dimensional sculptures... I decided on working on a motion piece with my friend Travis Schooley. The piece we're working on is a stop motion piece, and we've been working pretty hard to get it done within a few weeks from now... The process of coming up with ideas for shots, and scenes has really been rewarding as im using alot of different materials and trying to think in a different way.

The pieces here are all 4.5"x7" and are mixed media/collage... I couldnt get good scans of these because they're actually 2D & 3D. These are my pieces that were done as preliminary visual test(story board) of what was happening during my scenes of the motion piece... but i really like how they stand alone as pieces of work also... they're a little hard to decipher, but hopefully once the motion piece is done and i post it, it'll make a little bit more sense. I'll be posting more preliminary work for the motion piece in the next few weeks, and hopefully the motion piece will come out as good as we hope.

After building the last project, i went on to build this boat, inspired by some of the boat prints that i've done. This boat was basically built with no reference, and i just built upon pieces of wood that i had put down before. Also this project isnt quite done as i wanted to silk screen sails with different stages of a storm within them, but i went ahead and submitted it in to the gallery. The size of the boat is about 3-4 feet in height, and about 5 feet long, 2 feet wide.

It's kinda nice to make an image, then to try and make it 3-dimensional.. It comes with its own set of huge challenges but I personally think its well worth it. Hope you guys like.

Earlier this year i did a print of a capitalistic construction robot. I really liked this piece and about 3-4 weeks ago i finished actually building this sucker. Here are some pictures.

Here is a picture before it was painted, the whole piece is constructed out of different types of wood, from balsa to bass and whatever else i could find.

These are pictures of it in the Art Center gallery.. Kind of hard to see without a white wall behind it.

Heres pictures of it with a light shooting into the model, casting a shadow very similiar to the two dimensional silkscreen print.. The Constructacon is abaout 3 ft tall and the cranes around 5 ft tall.
